POCH STRIKES BACK: "The failure comes from..."
The Argentine coach spoke about his stint at the Parisian club and was adamant he doesn't think it was his failure
His departure was sealed in a single game. Against Real Madrid, at the Santiago Bernabéu and for the second leg of the Champions League round of 16, that was the night that his fate was set. That night, the Paris Saint Germain project fell apart and that was the end for Mauricio Pochettino, who, although he won Ligue 1, did not have the support of the club.
After a long time, Pochettino broke the silence and assured: "I don't think I have failed. The failure comes from the last fifty years, not of the last season, because PSG, especially in the last ten, eleven years, with the arrival of the new owners, have done everything to win the Champions League. It is clear that PSG's project involves winning the Champions League and everything that is not winning the Champions League can always be considered a failure".
Along the same lines, Pochettino added: "Dominating the French league or domestic competitions makes the fan or supporter not give it the importance they deserves. We won this year the tenth title that historically equals Saint Étienne, the two teams that they won the most titles in the French league. There are ten titles. We're not talking about fifty. We're talking about only ten titles. So, I think it's underestimated a lot, it's not given value, but of course, when you win it's an obligation and if you don't win it looks like it was a total disaster".
On the other hand, Pochettino does not believe that Kylian Mbappé has influenced the decision to remove him from office: "I don't think it is Kylian who has designed the new project. Those in charge, in this case the president, are the ones who decided that the most convenient thing was a new project for the club. It has been an incredible possibility to be able to coach so many big names, so many figures in a locker room, sharing moments. That has been one of the most positive things, having been able to meet them and compete under those circumstances".
To close, Pochettino, who is out of work right now, remarked: "We were signing the termination of the contract one day before starting the preseason, between July 3 and 4, and it is clear that at this moment it is difficult because they are all projects closed, so now I am adapting to the new circumstances and always with my sights set on progressing and above all on analyzing everything that was the last year and a half at Paris Saint Germain".
