THE CURSE CONTINUES: Rangers will go 50 years without an European title
The Scots made it into the final match of a continental competition six times, but have only managed to win it once
After yesterday's loss against German side Eintracht Frankfurt, The Gers continue to carry on with the curse of being unable to reach international glory, having lost five out of the six finals they have played in.
Their first international match was in the 1956 European Cup, and resulted in a 2-1 victory against French side Nice at Ibrox. Since then, they managed to take part in thirty Champions League/European Cups, ten UEFA Cup Winners' Cups, twenty five Europa League/UEFA Cups, and one UEFA Super Cup, making a total of 74 European appearances. They have only been able to lift a trophy once.
Rangers won in 1972 their only continental title
Across all those competitions, the Scots made it into the final match six times. The 1960/61 European Cup Winners' Cup was their first failure, where they ended up losing 4-1 on aggregate to Fiorentina. The same happened six years later during the 1966-67 edition when Bayern Munich made The Blues struggle and beat them 1-0 after extra time.
Its 1972 the year most Rangers fans believe as the greatest in their whole history. That glorious time when on May 23rd Collin Stein and Willie Jonhson scored to make Jock Wallace's side champions of the European Cup Winners' Cup at the Camp Nou, beating Dynamo Moscow 3-2.
After that success, they've have only been able keep the good form until the final, reaching the last match of the competiton on two ocassions, in 2008 and now in the 2021/22 Europa League. This time, it was Aaron Ramsey missing a pen in the shootout as Eintracht Frankfurt that broke all of the Blues' hopes to reach glory again.
