LEGENDS: Real Madrid added three names to their constellation of stars
The Merengue club decided to honour three of their most important players in the last decade
Legends do not always end up receiving the tribute they deserve. Ajax's greatest of all time Johan Cruyff famously retired with long-time rivals Feyenoord, Andrea Pirlo was almost forced out of AC Milan and even someone like Iker Casillas left Real Madrid through the back door. Luckily, sometimes appreciation is shown to the players that helped clubs lift thropies and live magical moments, and it's precisely Los Blancos who have just honoured three of their modern icons: Marcelo, Isco, Gareth Bale.
All three have been added to the Leyendas de Fútbol (Football Legends) section of the club's website, where they are now listed among other greats of the Merengues such as Di Stéfano, Raúl, Zidane and others.
Isco is perhaps the most contentious of the inclusions. The Valencia Academy graduate struggled for minutes at the club and moved to Malaga, where he had a breakthrough season in 2012-13, leading the Andalusian club to the semi finals of the UEFA Champions League. Isco moved to Real Madrid in 2013, but often had to fight for his spot and was accused of being irregular. However, when he was on top of his game he drew comparisons with Zinedine Zidane, was an important part of the team and won three LaLiga's and four Champions Leagues with Real Madrid.
When it comes to Gareth Bale, his place in Real Madrid history cannot be undervalued. "Bale has been part of the history of this club and he is going to remain in the memory of the history of Madrid. He has been important in the Champions League and Cup finals... It is normal for every fan to recognize this", so were the words of Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancellotti when he was asked about Bale's impending departure from Los Blancos. One of the players that have won five Champions Leagues while at the club, Bale scored plenty of iconic and important goals for Real Madrid and is a true legend of the club.
In the case of Marcelo, it's not just another of the many great players and legend that have worn the storied white shirt, but the most decorated player in the history of Real Madrid, with 25 trophies won. Marcelo joined Real Madrid in 2007 from his youth club of Fluminense and went on to be one of most consistent and best performers in the history of the club. After, 544 matches played donning the white shirt across all competitions, 40 goals scored, 103 assists provided, six LaLigas, two Copa del Reys and five Champions League, there is absolutely no doubt that Marcelo is part of Real Madrid history.
