TOO EXPENSIVE: Lukaku keen on Inter return but economics not working
The Belgium forward would love to return to his former club, but something extra will be needed to make the money side of the deal work
This has been a transfers window where players haven't been shy about their desire to move or change clubs. From Mané's statements saying that most Senegalese people wanted him to leave Liverpool to Robert Lewandowski waging open war of words with Bayern Munich's Sporting Directo Hasan Salihamidžic, it has been a show of player power all along.
One of those who said they were uncomfortable at their club was Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian star commented back in December 2021 that he "hoped one day he could return to Inter", and is now more than ever looking like he could get his wish of departing Chelsea.

However, there is a problem. Serie A economics are not Premier League economics. According to UK newspaper Daily Mail, despite Lukaku accepting a pay cut to join Inter, the Italian club would still be unable to afford the transfer fee required by Chelsea. Let's not forget the big Belgian moved from the Nerazzurri to the Blues the past season for over 110 million euros.
With Lukaku adamant that he doesn't want to play for Chelsea anymore, it's looking like the only option will be for him to move on loan. As reported by the Daily Mail, Chelsea would require the payment a loan fee of 20 million pounds (around 23.5 million euros) from Inter Milan for the move.

And yet, it's looking like even that is a little too much for the 2021 Serie A winners. While negotiations are ongoing, it's looking like something extra will be needed for Lukaku's dream of an Inter return to work.
