Ten Hag on Ronaldo: "It's important that there are consequences"
The Dutch manager has explained his reasons for applying discipline with the Portuguese star
The consecuences of Cristiano Ronaldo's decision to leave the pitch of Old Trafford during Manchester United's clash with Tottenham are beginning to appear. Erik ten Hag reportedly split the Portuguese star from the rest of the squad, and now the Dutchman has given his explanations.
It will become an iconic image, sadly, of the latter stages of Cristiano Ronaldo's career. With Manchester United winning in one of the most important matches of the season for them, the Portuguese quite literally gave his back to the team and left the stadium, after refusing to come in as a substitute for Ten Hag. The player and the coach have been at odds for a long time now, and things aren't improving.
"Yes, Cristiano Ronaldo refused to come on against Tottenham", admitted Erik ten Hag during his latest press conference, ahead of his team's visit to Chelsea, "There has to be consequences. It is important for the attitude and mentality of the group".
Ten Hag insisted that under him actions like this will carry consecuences, regardless of who is the player: "It will have a reflection for him, but also for everyone". Cristiano Ronaldo is set to miss out on the Red Devils' trip to London to face Chelsea, as per a club statement released recently. "First time with Rayo wasn't acceptable, but he wasn't only one. The second time has consequences. Football is a team sport and you have to respect standards", added Ten Hag.
With many fans concerned that Cristiano Ronaldo's attitude is doing nothing but to tarnish his legacy with the way he's acting recently, it would seem that the best thing for the striker could be leaving Manchester United as soon as possible, as he's been asking since the summer.
