THEY WANTED HIM OUT: Barça star close to loan move back to France
One of the players Barcelona wanted to move out could be close to granting them their wish
While many hypotesised that Barcelona would lose the capacity to lure players to play with the famous Blaugrana shirt, that has hardly been the case with the likes of Lewandowski, Di María and Bernardo Silva reportedly interested at some point in joining. On the other hand, the economics involved in the deals for top talents have indeed been a problem for Barça, and the pressure to move some of their "less wanted" players has been huge. Today, one of said players could seal a move away from the Camp Nou: Samuel Umtiti.
According to Spanish newspaper Sport, the former Olympique de Lyon player is in France to sign on a deal that will see him move on loan to Stade de Rennes. The World Cup-winning centreback has been disappointing at Barcelona, showing glimpses of his skill but more often than not struggling to mantain fitness to be a consistent performer, and thus was one of the main players the club wanted to move.
Umtiti signed a reduced deal in January 2022 which helped the club, but took his contract until 2026, so Barcelona were still looking for a move to take him permanently away from the Camp Nou. While that failed, a loan move to Rennes now seems all but done.
It is reported that Barcelona will pay a part of the Frenchman's wages and that Rennes will in turn have an option to buy at the end of the loan, although no figures have yet been disclosed. Samuel Umtiti joined Barcelona in 2016 for a fee of 25 million euros from Olympique Lyon. Since then, he has played 133 matches for the Catalan giants.
