Arsenal Connection: Henry to join Fabregas' new club
The former Arsenal striker will be joining his friend in a new venture
When it was announced that Cesc Fabregas was continuing his career at Serie B side Como, there were many raised eyebrows. The Spanish midfielder was coming off a bad year, but surely his stock hadn't fall so low that this was the best offer he got, right? Now, however, a plan begins to appear, and it involves another former Arsenal player: Thierry Henry.
That's because the former Gunners' star is set to be announced as a new minority shareholder for the Italian side, which gives a lot more sense to the Fabregas move if an Arsenal connection starts to build around the Serie B side.
"I still want to play. I don't want to end my career like this, it was a very bad year to end like this", had pointed out Fabregas when his move was announced, referring to his last year at Monaco, where he almost didn't play due to injuries. "I want to play, have a good time, enjoy myself, end my career with good feelings". Now he'll have the support of his friend and former teammate Thierry Henry at the Italian club.
"It's my great pleasure to announce that I will be joining Como 1907 as a shareholder" Henry said. "I have been waiting to get involved in a project like Como for a long time. A club with ambition but most importantly one that holds the same values as me - that the club and its local community both need to thrive".
Como is currently owned by Indonesian Djarum Group, purchased in an effort to provide a route for young Indonesian players to Europe four years ago. However, they soon discovered Italian regulations prevented non-EU players from being registered. Instead, the team has been promoted up two levels since then and now has aspirations of making it to Serie A by 2025 after hiring former Chelsea midfielder Dennis Wise as chief executive.
"For me, a football club is nothing without its local community. Yet so many times you see commercial objectives overtake and break that special connection and the heart of the club is lost. When I spoke to the team here and they told me about the community initiatives already in place and the ambition to ensure that as the club prospers so does the community, I knew this was the perfect opportunity for me", explained Thierry Henry about his decision to get involved with Como.
