OFFICIAL: Timo Werner seals return to the Bundesliga
The German striker struggled in his two seasons at Chelsea, and now he's back with RB Leipzig
Timo Werner had it all to be a success at Chelsea. A young, fast, technically gifted striker, the German had all the tools to take what he had shown at RB Leipzig and take it up a notch to become a truly world class player and lead one of the best teams in the Premier League. However, things didn't work out and now he's officially back with the club that saw him burst out into the scene.
RB Leipzig and Chelsea have reached and agreement for the transfer of Werner, with both the German and English clubs making it official on their social media channels. The move has been agreed, with a loan option discarded in favour of a permanent move to go through for 30 million euros. The player will sign a four-year deal to keep him with the Roten Bullen until 2026, for 8 million euros per season.
"I'm very happy to be able to play for RB Leipzig again", explained Werner upon his official announcement. "I had a great time here between 2016 and 2020, when we performed brilliantly as newcomers in the league. It was a dignified departure for me to leave the club as record goalscorer, but that's in the past now and I'm looking ahead, because both I and the club have developed in the past two years".
"I had two great years at Chelsea that I'm really grateful for and were crowned with the Champions League trophy", the German striker remarked, showing no ill feelings when looking back on his troubled time at Stamford Bridge. "The experience to play abroad in a new league really helped me and my career. Now I'm looking forward to the new season with RB Leipzig and above all to meeting the Leipzig fans again, who mean a great deal to me. We want to achieve a lot and of course, I want to become the first Leipzig player to reach the 100-goal mark".
For his part, RB Leipzig's technical director Christopher Vivell was very happy to make the deal happen: "Timo Werner is a fantastic striker who brings another dynamic to our attack thanks to his profile. His speed and finishing is fantastic; he'll bring our attacking game to another level and above all, make us even more unpredictable".
Thus ends Timo Werner's time at the Premier League, where he was only able to manage 23 goals and 21 assists in 89 appearances in all competitions, far from his record with RB Leipzig, where he got 90 goals and 40 assists in 156 games in four seasons.
