"It's a yellow ref!": UEFA plans to punish imaginary card waving
The Head of Referees for the European football body said there will be punishments for conditioning referees
It's a typical sight. A player goes down after a heavy foul, their teammates rush to their help and some push the referee to give a card to the opponent. If you're picturing the scene I'm sure you've already thought of it... the gesture of card waving, brading an imaginary yellow or rea card. But picture it no more, cause UEFA is cracking down on that behaviour.
The days of asking for your rivals to be warned could over
Roberto Rosetti, the head of UEFA referees, has urged officials to swiftly punish any instances of "mobbing of referees, mass confrontation between players and dissent by players and coaches".
The governing body of European football is resolved to try to discourage players from pressuring officials to caution or dismiss opponents, especially when they are lying to them about what actually occurred. "When a player tries to get another player punished, it's unfair for football", explained Rosetti, "It represents unfair conduct by players against their colleagues - a bad example of disrespectful behaviour".

"We are determined to protect the image of football, and we consider certain types of behaviour on the field and on the benches to be unacceptable", added the head of referees. Therefore, the gesture is now punishable by yellow card, with the ban also applying to managers and other staff.
