HISTORY MAKER: USWNT achieve equal pay
U.S. Soccer, announced today the signing of their new Collective Bargaining Agreement and achieved a major landmark
For years, women have fought for equal rights in football. Today, a major landmark has been achieved. In a year that has featured several major moments for women's football, like the record 91.648 spectators that filled the Camp Nou to watch Barça Femení's 5-1 trashing of Real Madrid, there has been another big step.
The United States Soccer Federation, better known as U.S. Soccer, announced today the signing of their new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for the Mens and Womens teams, reaching a historic precedent for the women's game: equal pay.
As reported by The Athletic, "The two teams will now be on level terms for: pay for every game played, from friendlies to World Cups and other competitions, bonuses for game outcome and World Cup participation, pay for every day in camp, equal split of World Cup prize money, equal split of a new commercial revenue share program with U.S. Soccer and equal rate for tickets sold for games controlled by U.S. Soccer".
This means that not only will each team be compensated accordingly, but that the two teams will be pooling and then splitting their prize money. Should, for example both teams win their respective World Cup competitions, the prizes of 42 million dollars for the men's team, and the 7 million dollars prize for the women's team would be combined and then split, with 45% of the total going to either team, and the remaining 10% going to the federation.
"We're opening doors for a new look of what football is in America", USWNT forward Midge Purce told The Athletic. "I'm really happy that people aren't signing for $16,000 like I did when I was still in college, and that people can support themselves more comfortably with National Women's Soccer League salaries", Purce added said. "It's a credit to the NWSL, and I hope it just keeps growing with this."
